The security challenges facing Colombia are many and varied, ranging from one of the highest homicide rates in Latin America to drug trafficking, disinformation, cyberthreats and natural disasters. In response, the armed forces are stepping up their capabilities by modernizing equipment, fighting misinformation, developing cyber defense resources and increasing coordination with their strategic partners. Here we take a deep dive into the challenges and threats, but also the technological innovations and collaborations employed by the armed forces to maintain national security.

Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Chile continue to be the leading economies of a rapidly growing continent. This is an exceptional period for Latin America, as the International Monetary Fund has revised its growth rate for 2024 upwards, from 1.9% to 2.3%, while trade is increasing and foreign investment breaking new records . Defense markets are expected to stabilize, with 1.5% annual growth between now and 2029. Security, a shared challenge in the region, is also in high demand.

Particularly hard hit by climate change, Latin American countries are likely to have significant needs in terms of anticipation, prevention and management of major crises.

The size of the Latin American cybersecurity market is expected to reach $4.85 billion by 2027 and $12.48 billion by 2029. Latin America needs a stronger cybersecurity base to defend the future of its businesses.
